Tongueology™

The study of the tongue and its truths.

Everything starts with the tongue

Long before a baby takes a first bite or says a first word, the tongue is already at work: feeding, swallowing, helping with breathing, and quietly shaping the mouth it lives in. It keeps working, day and night, for the rest of our lives.

Tongueology is a simple idea. Instead of asking only what the tongue looks like, we ask what it can do, and what it can't do yet. That one question changes the conversation for a lot of families.

Where the tongue rests matters

When the mouth is at rest, the tongue is meant to rest gently against the roof of the mouth. When it rests down low instead, we call that low tongue posture. Sometimes the tongue stays low because it can't easily lift. Sometimes it stays low because, for that body, low is where it feels safest.

Here's how we explain it to children: sometimes the tongue is shy. It would rather stay downstairs than come upstairs to play with the other toys. Our job is to help it feel safe enough to come up.

A tie is something you can see. A restriction is about what the tongue can do.
